The Senses: A Visit to the Market / Una visita al mercado

Last weekend, I visited a local food market. (El fin de semana pasado visité un mercado).

  • The appearance (apariencia) of the stalls was incredible because everything was very colorful (colorido).
  • I could smell the sweet scent (aroma) of fresh flowers.
  • I bought a shiny (brillante) red apple; its skin was smooth (lisa) and soft (suave), but the flavour (sabor) was unexpectedly bitter (amargo).
  • While I was walking, I heard a man yell (gritar) to sell his vegetables.
  • The whole experience was truly gorgeous (maravillosa).

Memory: The Challenge of Exams / El desafío de los exámenes

Studying for exams is always a challenge for my memory (memoria).

  • I have to learn many history dates by heart (de memoria).
  • To help me recall (recordar) the information accurately (con precisión), I usually read my notes aloud (en voz alta).
  • I always make an effort (hago un esfuerzo).
  • My teacher says that having a positive (positiva) attitude is important.
  • Sometimes, a simple photo reminds (recuerda) me of a lesson and I can recognise (reconocer) the answers.

Fears and Phobias: Facing the Heights / Enfrentarse a las alturas

Many people have common (comunes) fears, but mine is quite specific: I am terrified of heights (alturas).

  • I feel a lot of anxiety (ansiedad) and my heart starts to pound (latir con fuerza).
  • It is a terrifying (aterradora) feeling because I often feel trapped (atrapado) and helpless (indefenso).
  • In those moments, I usually sweat (sudar) and struggle (me cuesta) to breathe normally.
  • I have decided to face (enfrentar) my fear to get over (superarlo) it.
