Verbos Modales en Inglés

Los verbos modales incluyen: can, must, should, might, could.

Can

Usamos can + verbo para hablar sobre habilidades, posibilidades y permisos.

  • Ejemplo: Ella puede hablar bien francés, ella puede ser su esposa.
  • Can't es la contracción de cannot + verbo.
  • She can't speak french well.
  • She can't go to the disco.

Must

Usamos must + verbo para hablar sobre obligaciones.

  • Tú debes hacer tus tareas.
  • Tú debes hablar inglés aquí.

Mustn't

Usamos mustn't + verbo para hablar sobre prohibiciones.

  • You mustn't eat in the library.
  • You mustn't park here.

Could

Usamos could + verbo para hablar sobre habilidades en el pasado.

  • He could swim when he was five years old.

Should

Usamos should + verbo para dar consejos.

  • You should help your schoolmates.
  • You shouldn't eat so much cake.

Might

Might (podría, quizás, puede que) se usa para demostrar que algo es o fue posible.

El Segundo Condicional (Second Conditional)

El segundo condicional se usa para hablar de situaciones imposibles o improbables.

  • Ejemplo: Si yo fuera millonario, me gustaría comprar esa mansión.

Estructura

Está formado así:

if (condition clause) + result clause

if + sujeto + simple past | sujeto + would + verbo en infinitivo

Ejemplos Afirmativos y Negativos

  • If I had a million dollars, I would buy a big house. (I'd = I would)
  • Negativo: I wouldn't refuse if you offered me $10,000.
  • I would be surprised if he didn't come. (wouldn't = would not)
  • If I didn't want to go, I would tell you.
  • If he didn't live by the river, he couldn't go fishing.
  • If we didn't have to work today, we could have a picnic. (didn't = did not)

Preguntas

  • What would you say if you met the President?
  • If it snowed in next April, what would you do?

Reglas Clave del Segundo Condicional

  • Were se usa con I, he, she, it (en un contexto formal o tradicional).
  • Was y were significan: estaba, estuve, era, fui.
  • El verbo principal en la cláusula de resultado va en infinitivo (o sea, el verbo no cambia).
  • Was lo utilizas con las personas del singular: I, he, she, it.
  • Were lo utilizas con las personas del plural: you, we, they y con I en el caso de If I were you (si yo fuera tú).
  • La coma no se usa si el would va primero en la oración.
