Ontogenesia

Izaki bakoitzak eraldaketak izaten ditu, jaio aurretik hasi eta hil arte, adibidez: arrautza izatetik hegazti bihurtu arte, edo hazi izatetik landare bihurtu arte. Aldaketa multzo hauei ontogenesia deritzo (grekozko ontos 'izatea' eta genesis 'jatorria' hitzetatik).

Filogenesia

Espezieak ere etengabe aldatzen ari dira. Ez dira banakako aldaketak, espezie esaten diogun multzo osoarenak baizik. Filogenesiak espezieak denboran zehar aldatu direla adierazten du; espezie batzuetatik beste batzuk sortu dira, eta horrela, filum (mota) bat sortu dute.
