Hestersuffers forthree reasons:the executionof a penalty imposedby moralityexercisedby judges, priestsand the people,by the inabilityto imposeany moral codeor transferher daughter tobe the resultof sin,and thesilence thatself-imposedwhendisclosingthe identity of thefather and thusco-author ofsin.
All this leads to a life in solitude, apart from the community and any kind of human relationship. Over time, even when it returns to reinstate within the colony, his attitude is not very different from when it was ostracized: silence, an austere work and dedication in everything we do.

Hawthorne creates a moral character and courage that becomes the measure of all the other characters and, through the vital dilemma represents sin eventually becomes a social convention, run by the community against the impossibility freedom of conscience of individual tribal undermined by the attitude of Puritan village.
