Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velázquez, known as Diego Velázquez, was a Baroque painter, considered one of the leading exponents of Spanish painting and painting master universal. He spent his early years in Seville, where he developed a naturalistic style. At 24 he moved to Madrid, where he was appointed painter to King Philip IV and four years later was promoted to painter, the most important position among the painters of the court. His job was to paint portraits of the king and his family. He has 120 or 125 works themselves. His two great works are: Las Meninas and the Spinners. The core of his paintings that made up the royal collection is preserved in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
Diego Velázquez died in Madrid on August 6, 1660 at the age of 61.
