1. Carta de solicitud (Application letter)
To: ...
From: ...
Subject: ...
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to apply for the post of ... advertised in ...
I am a final-year student at the University of León, where I am studying for a degree in Education. I have a high level of spoken English, as I completed my practicum at Stranmillis College, Belfast, for three months at St Michael's School.
As you will see from my CV, I have some relevant experience, as I have worked for the last two years at a fast-food company called Pizzamovil. I was in charge of taking pizza orders by telephone and working as a waitress, so I am used to handling money and, on occasion, having to refuse entry to drunk people. My boss would be happy to provide a reference.
I am very enthusiastic about ... and would welcome the chance to be part of this event. I believe I would be suitable for the advertised position because, apart from my experience, I am a cheerful and extroverted person who gets on well with people. Friends describe me as calm and patient, and I think I would be able to cope if I had to deal with angry or difficult members of the public. I would certainly know how to look after myself if I got into a fight!
I attach a full CV and, if you require any further information, I would be happy to provide it. I would also be grateful if you could send me information regarding accommodation during the festival.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Paula Cantón

«Distant Waves»: a novel inspired by the Titanic
"Distant Waves" is a novel based on the real facts of the Titanic. A thriller set in the United States, it immediately became an international bestseller.
In this book, an elderly lady who claims to be a survivor of the Titanic tells her story to an eager group of treasure hunters, who are in search of a rare diamond in the Titanic's wreckage. Her name is Rose, and she was a passenger on the Titanic along with Jack, the male protagonist. The two meet, and Rose is unhappy with her arranged marriage to a high-class man. In contrast, Jack, a young artist who struggles to get by in life yet inexplicably enjoys it, reveals the true Rose hidden behind her upper-class appearance. As he continues to spend time with her, the two fall in love and kiss on the bow of the Titanic. Meanwhile, the ship hits an iceberg, and Jack is framed for theft and chained up in the lower decks of the ship as it sinks! Rose tries to find a way to free him and get off the ship. However, there were not enough lifeboats for everyone, and many people died from the freezing water, including Jack. When Rose found the necklace after she was rescued and was aboard the Carpathia, she kept it for all those years. But when she had the chance to return to the place where the Titanic sank, she felt the necklace should be with the ship and with the people who died in the sinking, including Jack.
A strong and original protagonist
The great strength of this book, and what makes it so different from other thrillers, is the character of Rose. The protagonists of most romantic books and films tend to be young and beautiful women. The old Rose, however, is a 100-year-old woman who connects us to history.
My only criticism of the novel concerns its cover, which shows a nude woman. I think it does not suit the book's content.
A recommended read
Not only is this a complex and deeply romantic novel, but it also addresses real problems in society. For all lovers of romantic novels and thrillers, Distant Waves and the Titanic film are a must.
