What is a Compound Noun?
A compound noun is a noun made up of two or more words. We combine these words to create a new noun with its own distinct meaning.
- For example, we put "cell" and "phone" together to make "cell phone."
- We put "home" and "work" together to make "homework."
Meaning of Compound Nouns
Sometimes, the meaning of a compound noun is easy to deduce from its constituent parts:
- laundry room: a room where you do laundry.
- bookstore: a store that sells books.
However, sometimes the meaning of a compound noun is not so easy to guess from the individual meanings of the words used on their own:
- living room
- headphones
- grandmother
