Aquí el narrador cuenta una historia de un hombre que conoció un verano que fue al norte de Noruega. La isla donde se encontraba se llamaba Lofoten, tenía cercanas otras dos islas llamadas Vurrgh la más lejana y Moskoe la más cercana, entre la isla Moskoe y Lofoten se producía un fenómeno que allí llamaban Moskoe-strom, que consistía en un gran torbellino o maelstrom, que se producía durante seis horas cuando las mareas cambiaban, El hombre que acompañaba al narrador era un pescador, quien junto a sus dos hermanos, entre los cuales el era el del medio, eran los únicos suficientemente valientes para pescar en ese lugar, durante el poco espacio de tiempo en que el mar estaba calmo. Sin embargo un día le ocurrió algo que le quitó todas sus fuerzas e hizo que con treinta y seis años pareciera un hombre de sesenta y cinco, lo que ocurrió fue que mientras pescaba con sus hermanos cuando el mar estaba calmo, de repente, sin ninguna señal previa se nubló completamente con una oscuridad impenetrable, unas nubes enormes se posaron sobre ellos, no demoraron mucho en percatarse que estaban en medio de una tormenta, con una embarcación bastante pequeña, y su mayor temor pronto se hizo realidad cuando el mar comenzó a moverse alocadamente hasta que se formó el gran remolino en el agua, con el movimiento de las grandes olas uno de los hermanos, el menor, salió despedido de la embarcación y se lo tragó el mar, en cambió el y su hermano mayor estaban asidos fuertemente a la embarcación, luego de un rato el hombre que cuenta su historia se dio cuenta, ya dentro de la corriente del gran remolino que mientras más grande era el objeto más rápido se hundía hacia el fondo del remolino, esto le dio la idea de que si se ataba a un barril, probablemente este terminaría saliendo a flote una vez el temporal pasara y se podría salvar, y así lo hizo, pero su hermano no le hizo caso y se mantuvo anclado en su embarcación y se hundió en el remolino, al final el hombre salvó su vida, pero al día siguiente del suceso, su pelo se volvió gris y su apariencia la de un anciano.

The murders in the Rue Morgue (los asesinatos en la Calle Morgue):

El narrador cuenta la historia que pasó junto a su amigo August Dupin en Francia. Un día estaban Dupin y su amigo leyendo el periódico y se encontraron con una noticia particular que llamó su atención, decía que en la calle morgue habían sucedido cosas extrañas, la gente del lugar escuchó gritos provenientes de la casa de una mujer llamada Madame Espanaye que vivía con su hija, la gente se alborotó frente a la casa y un policía que estaba con ellos decidió entrar a la fuerza, en el camino hasta la habitación donde se encontraban las mujeres estaban todas las puertas cerradas desde dentro, en la habitación más grande escaleras arriba encontraron a la hija de Madame Espanaye introducida a la fuerza en la escalera, con el cuello completamente dislocado, luego de buscar mucho encontraron en el patio trasero el cuerpo de Madame Espanaye tirado en el suelo, quebrado y con la cabeza a punto de salirse del cuerpo. Este caso turbó a la policía y mantuvo expectante a mucha gente durante un tiempo, porque las personas que habían entrado escucharon unas voces antes de llegar a la habitación del suceso,  una de ellas era claramente una voz ronca de un francés que exclamaba “Mon dieu!”, pero la otra, más que una voz eran chillidos agudos inentendibles. Al final la policía descubrió que Madame Espanaye había retirado todo su dinero del banco hacía pocos días, y decidieron que el asesino había sido el hombre que les había llevado el dinero, porque no encontraron más sospechosos ni huellas que llevaran a uno. El hombre inculpado era amigo de Dupin y este sabía que él no era capaz de una atrocidad así, por lo que decidió resolver el caso bien, consiguió entrar a la escena del crimen, y luego de un examen minucioso dio con las pistas que necesitaba,  primero descubrió que el o los asesinos habían bajado por la tubería del techo y entrado por una ventana, esto lo supo por un picaporte que estaba roto en la ventana contigua a la tubería, luego descubrió, en base a la voz y a los cabellos que encontró en la habitación que no eran pelo humano, que el asesino no había sido un humano sino un orangután que probablemente se había escapado de un marinero que lo habría levado a Francia para venderlo. Publicó un anuncio falso en el periódico diciendo que había encontrado al orangután, para así atrapar al marinero dueño de este, esta treta resultó y logró dar con el, quien fue a su casa, en la casa de Dupin el marinero contó todo lo que había pasado, el mantenía al orangután encerrado, pero por un descuido un día se escapo y cuando el marinero volvió a casa encontró al orangután en la cocina jugando con un gran cuchillo, el animal, asustado por lo probable ira de su amo salió corriendo de la casa, el marinero lo persiguió hasta que lo vio entrar en una casa en una esquina de la calle Morgue, luego de un rato decidió seguirlo, al ser él un hombre de mar no le costó mucho subir por la tubería, pero cuando llego a la ventana superior escuchó el grito de Madame Espanaye y vio al orangután que blandía el cuchillo, el animal, al ver a su amo en la ventana se puso como loco y atacó a la hija de Madame Espanaye que estaba gritando despavorida, luego cortó el cuello de la madre, y al ver luego lo que había hecho intentó esconder los cuerpos arrojando a la mujer mayor por la ventana e introduciendo a la hija por el cañón de la chimenea. Después de que contó la historia el marinero se comprometió a atrapar al orangután, y lo logró, hablaron con el jefe de la policía para que soltaran al hombre que había sido acusado injustamente.

The narrator counts the story that happened together with his friend August Dupin in France.
