Domina los condicionales en inglés: Estructura y ejemplos prácticos

Zero Conditional

La estructura es: If + present simple, present simple.

Ejemplos:

• If you mix red and blue, you get purple = Si mezclas rojo y azul, obtienes morado.
• If you sleep badly, you feel tired = Si duermes mal, te sientes cansado.

First Conditional

La estructura es: If + present simple, will + infinitive.

Ejemplos:

• If you park here, you will get a fine = Si aparcas aquí, te van a multar.
• If you don’t hurry, you will miss the train = Si no te das prisa, perderás el tren.

En peticiones de cortesía, el «if» puede ser seguido por «will», «would» o «going to»:

• If you would wait for a moment, I’ll let them know you’re here. = Si no le importa esperar un momento, les informo que está usted aquí.
• If it is going to be more comfortable for you, we’ll change your hotel booking. = Si resulta más cómodo para usted, cambiaremos la reserva del hotel.
• I’ll cook the dinner if you’ll wash the dishes. = Haré la cena si tú lavas los platos.

Second Conditional

La estructura es: If + past simple, would + infinitive.

Ejemplos:

• If I won the lottery, I would buy a house = Si me tocara la lotería, me compraría una casa.
• If I were younger, I would do more sport = Si fuera más joven, haría más deporte.

Cabe mencionar que existe una forma de esta condicional cuya estructura es igual en español: Were it not for + noun, o «Si no fuera por + sustantivo»:

• Were it not for the heat, I’d go out for a walk = Si no fuera por el calor, saldría a dar un paseo.

Third Conditional

La estructura es: If + past perfect, would + have + participle.

Ejemplos:

• If I had woken up earlier, I would have arrived on time = Si me hubiera levantado antes, habría llegado a tiempo.
• If I had taken the headphones, I could listen to music in the subway = Si hubiera cogido los auriculares, podría escuchar música en el metro.

Mixed Conditional

La estructura es: If + past perfect + would + infinitive.

Ejemplos:

• If I hadn’t spent all my money, I would be able to help you = Si no hubiera gastado todo mi dinero, podría ayudarte.
• If we had looked at the map, we wouldn’t be lost = Si hubiéramos mirado el mapa, no estaríamos perdidos.
